How Important Is Goal Setting
I’ll start off by saying setting goals is really important if you want to achieve any level of success. More often than not, people underestimate the power of goal setting. People often say “I already know what I want in life, I don’t need to write down and plan anything”. While the act of setting goals may seem like a simple act, it can actually have a huge impact.
Sometimes as action driven individuals, we get so engrossed in the doing part of things. We want to take action, get this and that done. I used to think that I would rather use the time to actually do something to achieve my goals, and not ‘waste’ it on doing goal setting exercises.
1. Keeps us on track : There are so many things and people all demanding our attention and distracting us from staying on track to achieve our goals. It is very easy to get preoccupied and forget about your them if you don’t set proper goals.
2. Gets us to focus on important things : Goal setting helps us prioritize and focus on the things that truly matter to us in the long run.
3. Helps us save time : Goal setting helps you save time because your actions will now be focused on your intended outcome. Having this focus makes you more efficient.
4. It gets us off our butts to take action!
There are numerous goal setting tips on how to set goals effectively, goal setting strategy as well as the famous and widely used smart goal setting principles. However on this page, I want to highlight what I think are the most vital goal setting tips.
To get the most out of your goal setting, make sure you get these vital tips right.
Setting “Means” Goals VS “Ends” Goals
There are two types of goals, ‘means goals‘ and ‘end goals‘.
- End goals – are the outcomes or results that you ultimately want to achieve.
- Mean goals – are the goals that you use as a means to achieve those outcomes. It is not what you ultimately want, rather it helps you reach your final desired result.
We often get confused between these two types of goals and think that both are the same. It is very important to be clear on each type. When setting goals, what we want is to do is to set ‘end’ and not ‘mean’.
Here’s an example
Let’s take the goal of wanting to be rich. While many people may have that goal, that is not actually their ultimate end goal because I don’t think that what many people are seeking for is more digits in their bank account balance. Rather what you want is the things that money can give you, such as the ability to do things that make you happy, security, freedom and the ability to take care of your loved ones.
Unfortunately, too many people get caught up in the process of accumulating more dollars that they get so distracted by that and end up unhappy and unfulfilled no matter how much money they make. This doesn’t come as a surprise because they have focused on a ‘means’ goal and not an ‘end’ goal.
To set a goal, sacrifice for it and finally achieve it, only to find out later on that it wasn’t what you really wanted can be just about one of the worst feelings a person could feel.
So take your time when setting goals. Don’t be anxious to get it over with. Rather, make sure you know your ultimate outcome and what you really want to achieve.
Knowing the “Why” In Your Goal Setting
An important tip for goal setting is to know the reason for setting them to begin with. Why do you want to achieve it? The clearer your reasons, the better. The more reasons and the stronger your reasons are, the more likely you’ll stick to it till the end.
This is important because there will most certainly be obstacles along the way. There will be tough times, and discouraging things will happen. If you don’t have strong, solid reasons for wanting to achieve your goal, you will most certainly give up when the going gets tough. You’ll feel that it won’t be worth your time and going through the effort and pain. When you have strong solid reasons for achieving the goal, you will naturally have the desire and motivation to keep going.
Here’s an example of having a strong reason for your goals:
“I want to have healthy living habits so that I can live a long life and experience as many things as possible. So that I can be there for my kids and watch them grow up. Because my body is God given and sacred. Because I want to inspire my loved ones to do the same. Because if I don’t, then I am not loving myself. Because only then am I living up to my standards. Because it makes me proud of myself.”
With these strong reasons, anytime you feel like not taking care of your body and eating junk food, not exercising, smoking etc, you just need to go back to these reasons that you have written down and you’ll be driven to keep at it.
So when you do your goal setting, make sure you write down strong, solid, compelling reasons for wanting to achieve your goals.
Details Are The Key To Goal Setting
When setting goals, the more detailed and descriptive you describe the goal, the better. Clarity is power. By describing the goal in detail, and going into the specifics of how you’re going to achieve it, it will no longer seem to just be some far away dream but rather become something that is entirely doable. In addition, being very descriptive and detailed in your goal setting makes it real and come to life. You can literally experience the process happening as you set your goals and this will give you motivation and determination to achieve it.
When the goal is unclear, you don’t know what you want to achieve let alone how you’re going to achieve it.
If your goal is just ‘I wanna be healthy‘ without any additional details, your brain does not know what it means. It’s so vague. What is considered as healthy? How can you achieve your goal without knowing what it exactly is? Instead be very detailed and descriptive, for example:
– I want to weigh ___ pounds / kilograms
– I want my body fat % to be ___
– I want to be able to run ___ miles
– eat nutritious balanced meal at least 5 days a week
– exercise 3 times a week (including a detailed exercise plan / routine)
This way, you have a clear target. You know where to start, what to do, how to do it and you will know when you have achieved the goal. When your goals are vague, you don’t know what to do and where to start. But when it is detailed and descriptive, you are making it possible and real.
When you are writing down the details to your goals, you are already starting the journey and making your goals happen. It already is part of the creation process.
Getting the best out of life often requires a lot of focus and hard work. Without these two elements it can prove to be an uphill task or even impossible. Almost nothing comes at the drop of a hat. However there are some methods that can prove to be quite useful along the way.
Having a plan in place before embarking on the journey is definitely a good idea.
This process is called goal setting. This is one way to achieve what is needed in order to reach the goal within a certain time frame and to the satisfaction of all concerned. Most successful completion of projects has this one thing in common – goal setting.
The elements involved in goal setting are fairly simply and should be so. Setting complicated and unreasonable steps to reaching the goal is not only foolish but can have a negative impact on the end results. Some things to include when setting a goal are as follows:
• Charting out a long term plan
• Mapped out the time frame for each progressive step
• Tasks and deadline in specifics
• Personnel involved in the execution of the plan
This is one of the best ways to keep track of what is happening and also how well the exercise is going. Goal setting is very important for other reasons too, like giving everyone involved a vision to work towards and a sense of accomplishment everything each step is successfully achieved.
Besides this, goal setting is also beneficial because it can also bring to attention any weak points that need to be addressed immediately before the project takes a wrong turn or churns the wrong results. It can also function as a bench mark to gauge any further needs that could prove useful to the project at hand or any future endeavors.
Goal Setting and Personal Development
Definite goals assist one important purpose. They keep you proactive. With no goals, you respond to conditions and events. Outside things control you. With goals, you produce your own conditions and events. Therefore you get to be a master of your destiny.
By adjusting goals you keep advancing and bettering your life. You are able to only reach destination if you specify it. Setting goals is the procedure to do that. You will not stagnate if you keep working with this personal development notion.
Arranging goals lets you accomplish more comfort in life. The chief error individuals make is that they set goals to accomplish happiness. Happiness can’t be the object of your goal. Happiness is something you have within you all the time. Perhaps you have not attained it yet, but it’s there.
These general hints are organized in a sequence that will support you from considering your goals to really accomplishing them. Don’t forget, these are only hints, take what you like and try it out for a while to see what works better for you. Don’t make your goals “oughts” but “wants”.
Utilize a journal to track your goals journey where you might keep daily or weekly records of your progress including affirmations, winners, appreciations for your hard work, honors, resistances, obstacles, and so forth. Utilize your goals journal to write goals first and to rewrite them over time. Utilize it to break your goals into steps. Critique your progress on a regular basis and jot some notes.
It’s very crucial to get yourself into an inspired, positive and relaxed state prior to writing goals. A few ideas for getting yourself into a positive state include: Meditation, hearing inspiring music, reading something fun or funny, watching an amusing movie, taking a walk in a beautiful place, exercise, or prayer.
After getting into a great mental and emotional state, begin your brainstorming. Write all likely goals quickly with no editing or criticism. You may review and prioritize later; right now you lack to be as originative as you can be.
Here are a number of likely areas of your life to consider when you’re developing your goals list: job, financial, relationship, loved ones, home, friends, personal development, wellness, appearance, possessions, fun and recreation, travel, spiritual, self-respect and service/community.
Goals fall under variable periods of time like: Immediate goals, 30 day goals, 6 month goals, 1 year goals, 5 years, 10 years or more farsighted. Make certain you may achieve what you want in the time frame you arranged.
When authoring your goal, state it like it has already occurred. Put your goals in words that presume that you already have accomplished them. For instance, “I now have a new car.”
To get you passionate, invested and motivated, add emotional language to your composed goals. Here’s an illustration “I absolutely adore and am energized about my beautiful new house in the hills” which is much more passionate than “I like my new house”.
As your subconscious manifests things literally, you need to compose specific detailed goals. Utilize language that’s clear in describing exactly what it is you wishCompose in favorable terms rather than negative ones.
Check in with yourself to make certain that you’re considering what you truly want. Frequently we try to please other people at our own expense. You won’t be successful attempting to reach the goals your parents, spouse or other acquaintances or relatives wish for you. Think about your most crucial values and beliefs when developing your goals. For example if you value freedom, your goal might be to be self-employed. If security is what you value, you might want to work for the government where layoffs rarely occur.
Pick goals that you may really reach in a fair amount of time. After you’ve brainstormed, one way to prioritize is to put the peak priority goals at ten out of a possible ten points and the least crucial at one out of ten.
Break every goal down into manageable blocks producing a step-by step plan to accomplish it. For instance, if you require a new automobile, first decide precisely what color, model, year, and brand you need. Write this down in your goals journal. Then write the particular steps you need to get to your goal like.
